Synopsis/Plot:
In the 1980s, in Anantapur district, Narappa—a farmer—lives with his family in the village of Ramasagaram. The family includes his wife Sundaramma, their son Seenappa, and their daughter Bujjamma. They also had an older son named Munikanna. Narappa’s relationship with his older son is close, but he is distant and almost abusive toward Seenappa.
The conflict arises when Panduswamy, a landlord from Vadakoor, plans to build a cement factory with his youngest son, Doraswamy. To do so, they need Narappa’s 3 acres of land. However, the family vehemently opposes selling the land, especially Munikanna. When Sundaramma is attacked by Panduswamy’s son Rangababu, Munikanna retaliates by severely injuring him and ends up in prison.
To secure Munikanna’s release, Narappa pleads with Panduswamy, who demands that Narappa prostrate before every male resident of the landlord’s village as an act of atonement. Munikanna learns of this and, in a fit of rage, beats Panduswamy with a slipper. In retaliation, Panduswamy orders his henchmen, led by a hunter named Gampanna, to kill Munikanna. Tragically, they behead Munikanna, leaving his headless body dumped in the village.
Review:
Venkatesh shoulders the role of Narappa with assurance, capturing the pain and resilience of a father seeking justice for his family. The film stays true to its source material, Vetrimaaran’s Tamil film “Asuran,” which was based on the novel “Vekkai” by Poomani. The cinematography by Shyam K. Naidu captures the rustic beauty of the Andhra countryside, and Mani Sharma’s music adds emotional depth to the narrative.
“Narappa” is a gripping drama that delves into social issues, family bonds, and the fight against oppression. While it may not break new ground, it delivers a solid performance and resonates with audiences who appreciate intense storytelling. The Karamchedu massacre serves as a backdrop, adding historical context to the film.
In conclusion, “Narappa” is a worthy remake that showcases Venkatesh’s acting prowess and sheds light on the struggles faced by marginalized communities in rural India. A must-watch for fans of powerful narratives and impactful performances.
