Synopsis/Plot:
The film unfolds in two timelines: the present and 11 years earlier. In 2002, software engineer Alan Russell moves his family—wife Marie, 10-year-old Tim, and 12-year-old Kaylie—into a new house. Alan acquires an antique mirror to decorate his office, unaware that it harbors supernatural malevolence. Marie experiences horrifying visions of her own decay, while Alan becomes entangled with a ghostly woman named Marisol Chavez, whose eyes are mirrors themselves.
Fast-forward to 2013: Tim, recently discharged from a psychiatric hospital, dismisses the supernatural events surrounding their parents’ deaths. Kaylie, however, has spent years researching the mirror’s dark history. As an employee of an auction house, she gains access to the mirror and sets up surveillance cameras in their family home. Her goal: document the mirror’s powers and prove Tim’s innocence.
Back in 2002, the mirror drives their parents to madness. Alan isolates himself, and Marie becomes paranoid. Plants wither, and their dog Mason vanishes after being locked in the office with the mirror. Kaylie discovers Alan’s connection to Marisol and confronts her mother. Marie, now insane, tries to kill her children, but Alan locks her away. Desperate and hungry, Kaylie seeks help from her mother, only to find her chained to the wall, behaving like an animal.
Review:
Oculus transcends mere supernatural horror—it delves into the terror of doubting one’s own mind. Released from a mental institution, Tim joins forces with his determined sister, Kaylie, to confront the malevolent mirror. Director Mike Flanagan masterfully avoids jump scares, relying instead on suspense and psychological tension. The acting, especially Karen Gillan’s portrayal of Kaylie, is superb. While the plot may seem unconventional, the film’s thematic depth and eerie atmosphere make it a standout in the horror genre. Prepare to question reality as you gaze into the Lasser Glass.
