Set in present-day San Francisco, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” is a reality-based cautionary tale. The film explores the consequences of man’s experiments with genetic engineering, which lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. The story centers around Will Rodman (played by James Franco), a scientist working at a drug company. Will has developed ALZ 112, a potential treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. He tests it on chimpanzees, and unexpectedly, they exhibit remarkable intelligence, zooming up the IQ chart and developing extensive sign-language vocabularies. However, when a test animal goes berserk during a board meeting, the experiment is halted. Little do they know that this breakthrough will have far-reaching consequences.

Will’s life takes an unexpected turn when he takes home a helpless baby chimp named Caesar “for a few days.” As days turn into weeks and years, Caesar’s intelligence surpasses all expectations. He learns sign language, exhibits incredible problem-solving abilities, and develops a bond with Will’s surrogate mother, Caroline (Freida Pinto). However, as Caesar matures, he faces the harsh reality of his identity: he is not human, and the world outside is not as kind as the one he knows. The film follows Caesar’s journey from adored foundling to imprisoned martyr to revolutionary tactician, all while the tension between humans and apes escalates.
