Synopsis/Plot:
Shang-Chi (played by Simu Liu) is a key piece in a broken family with a tumultuous history. His power-hungry father, Wenwu (Tony Leung), has lived for a thousand years and wields the Ten Rings—a source of immense power. Wenwu’s society, also called the Ten Rings, has wreaked havoc across the world. However, the dysfunctional family dynamics are even more crucial than the rings themselves. When Shang-Chi’s mother dies, Wenwu tries to mold his son into a killer, leading Shang-Chi to leave behind his sister Xialing (Meng’er Zhang) and his father.
The film’s visceral stakes blend seamlessly with its superhero context, creating a mega-budget ballet that glides over an abyss of grief. Shang-Chi’s journey begins when he faces henchmen on a San Francisco bus, revealing his immense courage and fighting skills. The resulting hand-to-hand combat scene, shot with long takes and humor, marks the birth of an action star in Liu.
Review:
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” strikes a delicate balance. It reflects the real-life complexities between first-gen Asian American children and their immigrant parents while delivering dynamic MCU action. Tony Leung’s portrayal of Wenwu adds depth to the film, emphasizing the intense familial tension. Flashbacks reveal Shang-Chi’s chilling backstory, where Wenwu trained him to become a killer for revenge against those who wronged him.
The movie’s soulfulness sets it apart, making it a benchmark alongside other MCU gems like “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Black Panther,” and “Thor: Ragnarok.” Simu Liu’s performance and the film’s exploration of family dynamics make it a must-watch for fans of both superhero and character-driven cinema.
