Synopsis/Plot:
Ryan Gosling portrays Sierra Six (code name “007 was taken”), a former spy recruited out of prison by handler Donald Fitzroy (played by Billy Bob Thornton). The film kicks off with a mission gone awry when Six is ordered by his new boss, Denny Carmichael (Regé-Jean Page), to eliminate a target who turns out to be a fellow secret agent. As the dying man hands Six crucial intel, he reveals that Denny is corrupt.
Our stoic hero is suddenly on the run, but unfortunately, his character lacks depth beyond the clichés of not shooting kids and having a dark past. Enter Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former CIA black ops mercenary who will stop at nothing to capture Six—even if it means kidnapping Fitzroy’s daughter, Claire (Julia Butters). Six’s connection with Claire adds emotional stakes to the chase, as he’s the spy who values innocent lives.
Meanwhile, Dani Miranda (Ana de Armas), another spy, joins Six in his quest for freedom. Unfortunately, her character remains underdeveloped, leaving us craving more substance.
Review:
“The Gray Man” showcases Ryan Gosling’s transformation from heartthrob to action star. His portrayal of Six—a lethal ex-con-turned-CIA assassin—anchors the film. The Russo brothers deliver stunning visuals and execute intense action sequences, but the movie falls short in character development. Gosling’s Six is defined by action rather than personality traits, and the lack of depth hampers our investment in his journey.
Despite its flaws, “The Gray Man” remains watchable, especially for fans of espionage thrillers. If Netflix plans to turn this into a franchise, let’s hope future installments delve deeper into character motivations and storytelling.
