Synopsis/Plot:
“Thor: Love and Thunder” picks up with our space Viking hero, Thor (played by Chris Hemsworth), on a path of healing. He’s gone “from dad bod to god bod” after losing the gut he had in “Avengers: Endgame.” The people of Asgard have settled into a port town called New Asgard, led by the charismatic King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson). Meanwhile, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), Thor’s past human love interest, wields the restored pieces of Thor’s hammer Mjolnir and becomes the Mighty Thor. However, every time she uses its power, it takes away from her human capacity, which is especially devastating given that she has Stage Four cancer. The film introduces Gorr the God Butcher (played by Christian Bale), a tortured character seeking vengeance against all gods. Thor enlists the help of Valkyrie, Korg, and Jane Foster to stop Gorr and prevent the extinction of the gods.
Review:
“Thor: Love and Thunder” is more of a victory lap for director Taika Waititi, building on the success of “Thor: Ragnarok.” While it has familiar flourishes and jokes, this entertaining sequel stands on its own. The chemistry between Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman elevates the material, especially in the bolder, dramatic sequences. Christian Bale as Gorr is striking, even if the film occasionally undersells his god butchering for a more sentimental message. Overall, it’s a blockbuster comedy with heart and ambition.
